Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple in Tamil: Meenakshi Amman Temple is a historic Hindu temple in the holy city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva (in the form of Sundareswarar or the Beautiful God) and his consort Parvati (in the form of Meenakshi). This temple is the heart and lifeblood of the 2500 year old city of Madurai. The complex has 14 magnificent towers, including two golden towers with intricately carved and painted main deities. The temple is an important symbol of Tamils, and has been mentioned in Tamil literature since ancient times. But the present structure is believed to have been built in 1600.
The temple’s towers were covered with sardines until March 2009 for repainting. The work was completed by April 2009 by many temple-artisans. He did this work by giving up all bad habits. Much of the archaeological restoration work on the paintings, walls, inscriptions, sculptures inside the temple was completed in Yudhopadi (very soon). Now this temple is adorned with a more fresh look.
The most important festival associated with this temple is Meenakshi Thirukalyanam (). It is celebrated every year in the month of April. During that month, when most temples in Tamil Nadu celebrate anniversaries, many festivals are celebrated here, including Ther Thiruvila (chariot festival) and Theppa Thiruvila vanu (raft festival). Apart from this, important Hindu festivals like Navratri, Shivratri are celebrated here with grandeur. Like most Shakti temples in Tamil Nadu, thousands of devotees throng this temple every Friday during the Tamil months of Adi (July 15 – August 17) and Thai (January 15 to February 15). In every Tamil month some festivals like Avani Urchavam, Margaji Urchavam, Navratri etc are held in the temple. Like Meenakshi Thirukalyanam festival, Avani Moola Utsavam is also an important festival of Meenakshi Amman Temple. It is a 10-day festival mainly worshiping Lord Sundareshwarar. This festival depicts the various leelas of Lord Sundareswarar, also known as Thiruvilayadal, performed by Lord Sundareswarar in the city of Madurai to save his devotees from confusion and problems.
